I know what you are thinking. "Geocaching? What
is that? Never heard of it. Why should I care?!?!" Well, let me
explain.
Geocaching is an outdoor sport/game/hobby where you
use your GPS to find various caches (or treasure chests, as a couple
of kids I know like to refer to them) that are hidden out in the world.
Some are out in the woods. Some are in the cities. But I bet you walk
or drive past a couple every day of your life and never knew it. You
then sign your name as having found it and often trade out some little
trinkets or toys.
Well, Chris has been doing it for about four years now,
and more recently he got a couple of the rest of us into it, and let
me tell you, it is addicting. And tons of fun!
As a result of our new found addiction . . . um, I mean
hobby, we have decided to start something of a geocaching section and
have even hidden a cache perfect for beginners right here on our lot.
You can see the details of it here,
or just ask us and we will be happy to take a walk outside with you
to find it.
We have stocked GPSs from Garmin and Delorme for several
years now, but we have added in a few with more caching friendly features.
I have personally used a Colorado 400t and now am upgraded to the Oregon
550t. The topo maps and paperless caching are amazing!
I have also started stocking geocoins and travel bug
tags, from OakCoins, Coins and Pins and Groundspeak as well.
And becuase some of us like hiding caches almost as
much as finding them, we have added in several types of containers.
Now in stock is the entire gamit from .50 cal ammo cans to magnetic
nanos. With many sized bison tubes and decon containers in betweeen.
In addition to all of that, we are also an official
Groundspeak Distributor, which allows us access to all of the stickers,
log books, clothing and patches that they offer.
If you want to learn more about geocaching, you can
either just stop down at the shop and ask any of the addicts about it,
or check out www.geocaching.com.
If you are an experienced Geocacher and feeling chatty,
or if you need a hint on any local caches in the area we can help you
out there as well. Between the three of us, we have found most everything
there is to find in central VT, and are always happy to talk caching
or lend a helping hand.
